Brighstone Down
Brighstone Down is an elevated chalk downland area in the southwest of the Isle of Wight, rising to around 214 metres (702 ft). Its rural setting and elevated position make it an appealing location for stargazing, with open views across the surrounding countryside and relatively little nearby development. The open downland provides a good setting for naked-eye astronomy, particularly for observing constellations, bright planets, meteor showers and the Milky Way on darker, moonless nights. The elevated terrain can also provide more open horizons than many lower-lying locations, although trees and surrounding downland can restrict views in some directions. The northern slopes are bordered by Brighstone Forest, the largest woodland on the Isle of Wight, while Mottistone Down lies to the west and Shorwell Down to the east. As with any rural observing location, conditions can vary with the Moon, weather and local light sources. Visit prepared for dark conditions and check access conditions before travelling.
